As Grutas de Mira de Aire
Just a 30 minute drive from the Caracara Accommodation are the stunningly beautiful caves “Grutas de Mira de Aire”. Discovered in 1947 they were not available to be seen by the public until 1971. In the ten years that followed over 3 Million people visited them to take in their breathtaking splendour.
Throughout the 25 minute tour you will see geological features that have been given various names such as “The Red Room”, “The Jewellery”, “The Jelly-Fish” and “The Martian”.
As you descend the steps you will be treated to an eye fest of sights, all illuminated by around 3000 coloured lamps and culminating in a walk alongside a subterranean river where water cascades into it from above.
Unfortunately at the time of writing there are no tours given in English but this does not detract in any way from the experience.
The cost is just €5 per person and parking is free in the large area close to the entrance. The caves are open in the Summer months from 09:30 until 19:00 hrs and have slightly shorter opening hours at other times.
There are 350 steps going down so make sure you wear “sensible” footwear, a pair of trainers would be ideal, but the return is much easier, as they provide a lift. Note however that your exit point is about 350m from the main entrance and you will therefore need to walk back.
A small café is open in the entrance area to provide drinks, cakes, sandwiches, ice-creams etc.
Located immediately after you exit the lifts is an excellent Aquatic Park, where the kids can ride the water-chutes whilst you enjoy a meal in the restaurant.
