Built between 1515 and 1519 the Torre de Belém was constructed as a fortress and originally stood well out into the river Tejo.
The great earthquake of 1755 however altered forever the flow of the river with the result that it now stands on the water's edge although still surrounded on three sides by the sea.
The combination of Gothic, Venetian and Byzantine elements in the construction make the building unique.
