Golegă

Just 12 minutes away from Caracara Accommodation is the market town of Golegă.

It is a pretty place to visit at any time of year but in early November it becomes the centre of attention for all who love to buy, sell or just admire the magnificent Lusitano horses.

Starting in the 18th century as an agricultural fair and known as the Feira do Săo Martinho it later developed into the most important calendar event of the year for showing the Lusitano horses.

People come from all over the world to trade and view the various events and therefore, to reflect its growing popularity in modern times, it changed its name to The National Horse Fair.

There are many events taking place during the week but it is well worthwhile picking up an agenda to see when your particular favourite is scheduled.

Both the female and male riders go to great lengths to wear the most beautiful outfits to match the majesty of their mounts.

Entrance to all areas is completely free and you can wander around at will although keep your eyes and ears alert for horses coming from behind you!

There are many market stalls from which to buy interesting souvenirs and restaurants and cafes are plentiful.

Be aware though that some of the most exciting and spectacular events can take place late in the evening.
